1445617 Paving blocks R JORDAN 17 Aug 1973 [20 Oct 1972 5 Dec 1972] 39055/73 Heading EIB A road is paved by laying units 2 each comprising a number of block areas defined by dummy gaps 8 and 10 which form weakened zones intended to rupture, and having recesses 20 in their side faces, on a prepared bed and interposing supplementary stones equivalent to one or a multiple of the elemental areas, rollers or traffic moving over the surface causing rupture of the weakened zones and thus forming a road equivalent to one paved with individual blocks. When the supplementary stones are equivalent to more than one element they also include weakened zones intended to rupture. The recesses in the units and the stones may be formed with interengaging formations resisting horizontal or vertical forces. The elemental areas may be rectangular (as shown) or they may be T- section and may have zig-zag or undulating edges. The units may be layed in stepped, herringbone or parquet patterns. The units are preferably concrete and may include randon or regular metal or plastics reinforcement spanning the rupture zones. The dummy gaps may extend from both faces and be offset thus defining rupture zones inclined to the vertical axis. The depth of the dummy gaps may vary along their length. |
