Insecticides are based on juvenile hormone cpds. of formula (I) (where R and R1 are H or 1-4C alkyl, or R1 is geminal dialkyl such as gem. dimethyl or gem. dimethyl or gemmethyl, ethyl; R2 is 1-4C alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl or 1-5C cycloalkyl (e.g. cyclopropylmethyl); and m is 1 or 2), e.g. ethyl 3, 7-dimethyl-9-cyclohexyl-2, 4-nonadienoate. (I) are prepd. by reacting an aldehyde of formula (III) with a reagent of formula (III) (where R4 is 1-4C alkyl; R2 and R4 pref. having the same value). (I) display juvenile hormone activity, giving rise to disturbances in embryonal development, inhibition of metamorphosis, chemosterilisation and, in some cases, interruption of the diapause.
