Trimethylhydroquinone, which is an intermediate for vitamin E and can be used as an antioxidant, is prepd. by reacting 2,6,6-trimethyl-2-cyclohexene-1,4-dione with >=2 molar proportions of an acylating agent, pref. acetic anhydride, at -50 degrees C to +150 degrees C in the presence of a catalytic amount of an acid with a pKa value of 3 or of a Lewis acid so as to form a trimethylhydroquinone ester of formula (I): (where R is an opt. substd. 1-8C aliphatic, aromatic or alicyclic residue) which may be hydrolysed to give trimethylhydroquinone. |
