The retractable ballast keel for sailing yachts has a ballast weight (7) carried on two blade-form arms (5, 6) suspended from transverse, centre line, pivots (3, 4) at different heights. The arms form a continuous centre board when lowered. The pivots are positioned inside a slotted stub keel (2) under the hull, and so arranged that the raised ballast weight does not project below it. Front arm trailing and rear armleading edges are arranged to be in part-length contact in the raised and lowered positions to act as stops.
