Epsilon-Caprolactam is prepd. by catalytic rearrangement of cyclohexanone oxime in the gas phase at 210-450 degrees C in a turbulent catalyst layer consisting of 25-60% boric acid, calculated as anhydride, deposited on aluminium oxide. The catalyst is obtained by depositing boric anhydride or a cpd. forming boric anhydride in the reaction conditions on a support formed by aluminium oxide, hydrated aluminium oxide or aluminium hydroxide, and calcining at 1000-1500 degrees C, pref. 1000-1200 degrees C. The catalyst gives very high yields of lactam, and is very resistant to abrasion in the fluidised bed. |
