The measurement is made by a contact probe 14 on a touch/not touch basis and as shown is made on the bulge directly, but alternatively it may be made on the resulting sag which occurs ahead of the bulge Fig.3 (not shown). Downstream of the sizing die is a coolant bath 20 and the die (whose bore has the tapered entrance shown) has a slit 21 connected to a suction device 22 by which coolant is drawn through the die to produce surface hardening of the material. A further sizing die may be placed ahead of the take-up device 5. The "rod" may have any cross section, or may be hollow, in which case it may be made in separate parts at the first sizing die and welded together at the second. |
