<p>1491844 Devices for folding stacks of sheet-like articles F ATTUCCI 16 March 1976 [20 March 1975] 10380/76 Heading B8C A device for folding a stack 5 of sheet-like articles, e.g. flattened bags, comprises a conveyer having spaced, parallel conveyer belts 4 arranged to carry a stack of sheet-like articles, at least one grid, 8 or 9, composed of parallel rods, and stop means 6 engageable by a stack on the conveyer, the grid 8 or 9 being angularly movable from a position below the working surface of the conveyer to fold a stack positioned on the conveyer in engagement with the stop means 6. Individual tubular thermoplastic bags 3, sheared and welded at 1A, are discharged from a machine 1 in flattened form on to the conveyer 4 to form a stack 5 thereon while the conveyer is stationary, the conveyer comprising a number of transversely-spaced endless belts. Several stacks of bags may be formed side-by-side, and the stacks may be formed on the conveyer by other means such as guide surfaces and jaws for gripping and orientating the bags. When a stack has been formed, the conveyer indexes forward until the stack is located over a supporting surface 10 and abuts the stop 6, which comprises a pivotally-mounted grid of rods 7, The stack is folded by rotating the first grid 8 clockwise to a position B8 to form a first fold and then pivoting the grid 8 in the opposite sense into an upright position C8 to act as a stop while grid 9 is rotated anticlockwise to position E9. A labelling machine 11 is then lowered as shown in Fig. 7 for a pressing cylinder 13 to apply a self-adhesive label 14 to the stack and maintain it in its twice-folded state. The folded grids 8, 9 are then returned to their positions below the conveyer 4, the labelling machine 11 is raised, and the stop 6 is pivoted upwardly as the conveyer is indexed forward again to advance the folded stack to a collector (16), Fig. 10, not shown, or to a further conveyer, and to transport the succeeding stack towards the stop 6. The height of the grids 8, 9 above the working surface of the conveyer 4 in the positions B8, E9 and their horizontal spacing, and the size, and position, of the supporting surface 10 can be varied in accordance with the thickness of the stack, the dimensions of the bags, and the required positions of the folds. In a modification, Figs. 12, 16, not shown, the stack is folded only once on the conveyer (4) and is then transported by a transversely arranged second conveyer (22) to a second gate (26) where the stack is supported on a surface (31) and folded again while in abutment with a raised grid (33). A labelling machine (34) delivers a self-adhesive label 36 to the folded stack, Fig. 23, to maintain it in its folded state. In a further modification, Figs. 17-21, not shown, the stack is folded and labelled on the conveyer (4), in the form shown in Fig. 24. The folded stack may be delivered to a packing machine, e.g. to pack one, or more, stacks into an envelope, sack, box or other wrapper.</p> |
