The body of a locking mechanism for a strap has spaced side plates (11b). A pin (20) pivotally connects lever (18) to the plates, and a further pin (23) extends between spaced sides of the lever (18) and carries a hook (10). One end of a strap passes between the plates (11b) and around a series of pins to a second hook. The hooks are connected to anchorages on either side of a load around which the strap passes. The strap is tensioned by pulling on end (Sa). The lever (18) is rotated clockwise, further tensioning the strap and locking it with an overcentre action.
