A vacuum switch is provided in which an electromagnet coil, used to increase the current interrupting capacity of the switch, is only energized during actuation of the switch so as to avoid undesirable heating. The coil has its terminals connected to metal discs separated by an insulating disc, the resulting assembly being placed in a gap between stationary contact elements of the vacuum switch which contacts can be bridged by a U-shaped contact element movable so that during opening of the switch, arcs are established between the stationary contacts and the metal discs thus establishing an electrical path through the coil only during the continuation of the arcing. |
