Lance head for the top blowing process, where the head is attached to an oxygen lance which moves downwards and upwards; the head has a central oxygen inlet leading to four outlets, and a double-walled outer jacket for water cooling, the entire head being made of pure, electrolytic copper. The novelty is that the base of the lance head is polished. The polished base is pref. coated with silver, esp. by electroplating to obtain a thickness of 10-200 mu m Ag, and the mouths of the outlets are pref. also coated with silver. The silver coating may be compacted in a conventional manner. and a layer of gold may be used in combination with or instead of the silver. The working life of the lance is increased.
