<p>1416027 Refining molten glass OWENS-ILLINOIS Inc 30 April 1973 [28 April 1972] 20356/73 Heading C1M Molten glass is refined by introducing molten glass into a rotating container, so that centrifugal forces cause the glass to form a thin film about the inner wall of the container and the bubbles within the glass to migrate to the surface of the film, and discharging the glass from the rotating container in a radial direction. As shown, a container 10 is provided with an inlet 14 and a diverter plate 16 in proximity therewith. The plate 16 is provided with holes 17 for diverting the molten glass towards the inner walls of the container. The bottom of the container is closed, the glass being discharged through a plurality of ports spaced around the container. In a modification (Fig. 4), glass is discharged through an opening in the bottom formed by curving the inner lining 13 of the container towards the periphery thereof. In addition to the lining 13, which is preferably formed of platinum, the container comprises insulating layers 12 and an outer cylindrical wall 11. The wall 11 is provided with a flange 18 which is engaged by drive wheels 19 for rotating the container.</p> |
