Refractory mass and mouldings for casting steel, esp. for cladding the baseplate of an ingot mould, where the refractory is mainly granular corundum, with the addn. of SiC, Zr silicate, and an inorganic phosphate binder. The material may also contain kyanite and/or vanadium slag, the pref. mixt. contg. by wt. 50-70% corundum, 10-20% SiC, 10-20% zirconium silicate, =10% kyanite, 10% max. vanadium slag, and 8% max. phosphate binder. After drying mixing, 3-8% water is added for moulding by stamping; or 10-15% water for casting the mixt. In either case the prod. is dried and baked at over 600 degrees C., pref. at over 600 degrees C., pref. at 800 degress C. Used esp. for the top pouring of steel into ingot moulds, where the refractory has excellent resistance to erosion; freedom from sticking to the ingot; and is inexpensive. It can also be used for stoppers, gutters, etc..
|
