Ultrasonic probe for reactor pressure vessel bolts - has centering sleeves at both ends for accurate test heat positioning

An ultrasonic probe for testing reactor pressure vessel closure bolts consists of a rod-shaped support which is introduced into the hollow bolt and then executes a programme to different axial and rotational positions; the rod comprises several test heads to emit transversely to its axis. In addn., the test heads are mounted in radial recesses of the rod and each end of this rod has an elastically deformable centering sleeve to fix it inside the bolt. Pref. the axes of the bores are inclined to the direction of introduction of the rod. For the rapid testing of large numbers of rods, the probe is connected to a multi-channel evaluator unit. The arrangement enables an accurate coupling gap between the test heads and the inner wall of the bolt to be attained.
