A vehicle steering wheel has a deformable member 3 securable to one end of a steering shaft 2, and in use the deformable member 3 extends from the shaft 2 substantially to the medial plane of the wheel rim 4, the deformable member 3 and also the rim 4 and elastic strip steel spokes 5 of the wheel being covered at least on the side towards the driver with elastic foamed-plastics material to thereby form on impact surface 6 within the periphery of the rim 4 to minimize injury to the driver by impact with the steering wheel. As shown in Fig. 3 the deformable member 3 is of stepped shape and a deformable insert 7 of star-shaped cross-section is provided in each stage formed by the steps, inserts 7 being formed of expanded metal or perforated sheet metal. The wall or walls of deformable member 3 may also have perforations and its interior may be filled with foamed plastics material.
