The intense point light source, for high speed photography, is connected over a ballast resistor to a delay line and is shunted by a switch that controls the duration of current flow through the light source. The coaxial source consists of an anode rod, a cathode disc, a spacer and a window - all held together by a knurled collar, knurled screw and knurled nut. The cathode holder has a contact ring made of an erosion-resistant hard-metal alloy. The advantage lies in the source's producing relatively long flashes of light.
