Photochemical reactions in liquids are carried out in a vessel which is rotated. A lamp is mounted on the axis of rotation and there is a gas or vapour layer between the liquid surface and the outer sheath of the lamp. The wall thickness of the rotating vessel can be set at ca. 300um. The liquid is continuously fed into one end of the vessel and removed from the other. The vessel wall thickness can be greater at the inlet side for the liquid then on the outlet side or vice versa. During the reaction an excess pressure of 0.1 to 10 bar is used.Used for carrying out photochemical reactions on an industrial scale. The problem of solids encrustation on the light source causing a fall in efficiency is avoided. Reactor overcomes the problem of a falling liquor film in which the residue time in the light beam is low.
