The synthesis utilises a heterogeneous catalyst comprising an alkylsulphonic acid covalently bonded to an oxide of Gp.III or IV. The Gp. III or IV oxide is zirconia, titania, silica or alumina, (silica gel). The alkylsulphonic acid is (m)ethyl sulphonic, n-propyl sulphonic or isopropyl sulphonic, (propyl sulphonic acid). The reaction temp. is 160-180 deg.C and the prod. is a two-phase mixt. of an isobutylene-MTBE prod. rich phase and a heavier aq. methanol rich phase. |
