Concn. sugar syrup is prepd. from sugar-contg. plant parts, esp. sugar cane. The plant parts are comminuted to pulp. Sugary syrup is pressed out and extd. with liquid. Novelty consists in passing pulp, under press. counter-currently to extn. liquid, through a treatment reactor and heating to 60-140 (80) degrees C. Appt. used in process is also claimed. Sugar syrup is used esp. for chemical processes, e.g. for cheap prodn. of EtOH which can be admixed to benzine. Process is continuous. Decompsn. of tri- and di-saccharides is prevented. Yields are high. Appts. required is small. By-products e.g. bagasse and vinasse can be processed with generation of steam and power. Water consumption can be reduced by >60%.
