The mechanism generates even tension in a strip of material such as paper, plastics, or textiles fed to a pair of printing rollers. Before the printing rollers is a further roller (10) with trunnions (14, 15) on the end faces (12, 13). The trunnions run in bearing (16, 18) which are adjustable so as to bend the roller and form a corresponding curve in the strip of material (1) running over it. The roller can be of material allowing relatively easy distortion, while having sufficient rigidity to holf the shape of the strip to within close tolerances. Each trunnion can run in two bearings, one of which (17, 19) is fixed and the other (16, 18) adjustable. The latter can be slid in a plane at right angles to the strip, while the former are of the self-aligning type.
