A filter for liqs. comprises a cylindrical vessel with its axis vertical and bottom ends closed, and also a hollow cylindrical filter block coaxially mounted inside the vessel to occupy its entire length, leaving an annular space around the filter block inside the vessel. The dirty liq. enters through a downward-sloping, tangential inlet duct and flows helically downwards in the annular space around the filter block, while the filtered liq. is removed from the central hollow chamber of the filter block. The lower part of the housing constitutes a collecting chamber for filtered residue, which is discharged through a closable opening at the bottom. This residue collecting chamber is sepd. from the upper part of the annular space by a dividing partition contg. an opening, oriented obliquely downwards in the direction of circulation of the liq. in the annular space, so that the sediment tends to flow into this collecting chamber. The relatively rapid circulating flow of dirty liq. in the annular space tends to centrifuge the sepd. particles towards the outside, so that they fall to the bottom of the filter vessel; at the same time, the use of a horizontal dividing wall with an inclined downward passage through it results in a certain vertical downward component of the movement of the dirty liq., which tends to entrain the thick sediment towards the collecting chamber and to prevent any escape of this sediment back upwards into the upper part of the annular space. The sediment therefore becomes conc. at the bottom, preventing the concn. of sediment in the upper annular space from becoming too high.
|
