Electroslag remelting plant - uses non-consumable graphite electrode and is designed to produce different types of products

A mould base plate supports a cooled mould contg. a slag bath and a consumable electrode is driven vertically downwards, with its bottom end is immersed in the slag. An electrode is connected to one pole of a power supply. At least one noncumable electrode is used in series with the consumable electrode and can be moved vertically w.r.t. the mould base plate. In one plant, the electrodes are located on arms driven independently along one vertical pillar; and the mould base plate may be lowered during casting. The graphite electrode may be ring-shaped, and located on the mould wall, but sepd. from the latter by electric insulation; the bottom of the ring dips into the slag bath; and both mould and ring are raised during casting or the base plate lowered. The electrical efficiency of the plants is appreciably higher than that of conventional plants; prod. quality is better; operation and maintenance is easier; and prodn. costs are lower.
