<p>Molten metal contg. impurities is refined by (1) introducing it into a cylindrical tank and (2) agitating with a graphite agitator aligned axially in the centre of the tank, the lower part of the agitator working in the upper half of the bath of metal, by rotating the agitator at 120-125 rpm. providing turbulence to at least the surface of the metal bath. The agitator comprises a shaft with 3-8 radial extensions the radial length of which is 25-85% of the diameter of the core thin width being 40-80% of their length and thin height 75-200% of the dia. of the core. The dia. of a circle surrounding the projections being 25-40% of the dia. of the tank. a mechanical stirrer is less complicated than prior art mechanical devices and does not bring about cooling as do gases blown on for mere agitation purposes.</p> |
