A plug to close up galvanic elements is fitted with a device for the catalytic recombination of H2 and O2 which have been produced in the cell. Two or three spatially sepd. recombination catalysts are arranged in tandem, each with its own functional indicator, to form a system with a multiple redundancy. Plug recombines gases produced in charging and discharging accumulators into water. The risk of explosions is eliminated and maintenance for topping up the electrolyte is avoided.
