The machine automatically sharpens the teeth of a chain saw, having pivoting arm (51) on a vertically oscillating fulcrum (48) moving successive teeth into the sharpening station. A grinder (33) reciprocates vertically relative to the cutting station, the chain being mounted on a reciprocally rotating support (11) with the terminal drive mechanism (20, 21, 48) to the pivoting arm (51). The movements of the components are co-ordinated by independent transmission from three rotating disc cams (4, 13, 22). The cams are mounted on a common drive shaft (1), and the primary circular cam (4) is offset on the shaft to transmit alternating rotations to the chain support (11). The secondary elliptical cam (13) transmits (14) reciprocal vertical displacement to the pivoting arm (51) terminal drive mechanism, and the third circular cam (22) transmits reciprocal vertical displacement to the grinder (33).
