1355795 Removing stains from fabrics COLGATE-PALMOLIVE CO 30 April 1971 [1 May 1970] 21080/70 Heading D1P [Also in Division C5] Stains are removed from fabrics by immersion in an aqueous medium containing calcium ions and having dispersed therein a composition comprising a peroxygen compound, an activator having at least one RCON= group wherein RCO represents a carboxylic acyl radical, and at least one salt of an amino polycarboxylic acid, i.e. trisodium nitrilotriacetate (NTA) and/or ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid tetra sodium salt (EDTA). The proportions are such as to supply to the water at least five ppm and less than 90 ppm of the activator, an amount of peroxygen compound within the range representing 3-80 ppm of active oxygen and 100-300 ppm of the aminopolycarboxylic acid salt or salts. The wash medium is maintained in contact with the stained fabric immersed therein for a period of time sufficient to effect bleaching of the fabric. The peroxygen compound may be an alkali metal perborate or percarbonate. The activator may be tetraacetyl glycol uryl, N, N, N', N'-tetraacetyl ethylenediamine or m-chlorobenzyl 5, 5-dimethyl hydantoin. The peroxygen compound may provide a stoichiometric excess of active oxygen over the activator. Other ingredients of the wash medium include anionic and non- ionic detergents, pentasodium tripolyphosphate, magnesium sulphate, sodium sulphate, sodium silicate, proteolytic enzymes, optical brighteners, and a phenolic antioxidant. A calcium compound may be added when the washing water is soft. The fabric may be cotton-polyester and washing may be by soaking and/or agitation at not more than 160‹F, e.g. 105‹F.
