<p>Nuts are gravity fed into a shell splitting machine. The nuts enter the splitter through a vertical tunnel in which one or two balanced dividing plates align each nut in turn to pass into the splitting cutters. The cutters are 3 or 4 symmetrically spaced, chopping discs rotating in vertical planes. The splitting machine delivers on to a sorting grille where small waste and pieces of shell already sepd. are removed. Coconut milk is recovered via a strainer from the machine. Sepn. of kernel from shell is then carried out in a hot air rotary drum drier with adjustable internal stirring blades. Waste shell is sepd. and kernel passed onto a second, longer, rotary drum where the copra is fully dried by hot air. Dry waste from all stages is burned to produce hot water which, in turn, heats the air blown into the rotary drying drums. Process is continuous, and takes about 23-26 hrs. compared with 5-9 days when natural drying is used after manual splitting. The prod. is white and free from bacteria.</p> |
