The instructions are punched in binary form in labels made from metal sheet. The instruction can e.g. be for modifications to car bodies on a production line when a particular body should incorporate a feature required by a customer. The punch used has a horizontal guide for the labels above which a guide block is mounted. The guide block holds a number of punches. A matrix which is mounted below the guide has openings in which the punches can penetrate. A number of wedge plates are mounted above the guide block and are used to lock those punches in the block which are to punch a hole. Punch and label guide can be moved relative to one another so that a pattern of holes can be punched in the label.
