A cross-flow plate type heat exchanger for heating air by furnace waste gases comprises a series of parallel, spaced, graphite plates 50 arranged in plate packs 33 individually resiliently supported between frames 36 and 37, formed of angle members 60, 70 and T-section members 61, 71, the plates being bonded to and separated by end plates 51, 52 defining parallel gas and air flow paths extending perpendicular to each other. Four adjustable spring-loaded ties 38 interconnect the frames 36, 37 of each platepack and resilient sealing material is interposed between the ends of the packs and the frames in spaces (48), Fig. 10 (not shown). The plate-packs are bolted between upper and lower support structures (40) and (34), Fig. 2 (not shown), and gaps (42), Fig. 10, formed between the plate-packs are blocked off by the horizontal plate (64) of an upper cross-member (63) to prevent the flow of the furnace waste gases between the platepacks. A bellows expansion joint (41) allows relative movement between the heat-exchanger and gas ducting. |
