<p>1485500 Mixing screw EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 6 Dec 1974 [7 Jan 1974] 52852/74 Heading B1C [Also in Division B5] In an apparatus and method for introducing chopped glass fibre reinforcement into a polymer or elastomer, an extruder screw comprises a feed zone 11 for the polymer, a decompressive zone 12 having an aperture 13 in the barrel for the introduction of a continuous glass fibre roving, a first compressing zone 14, a mixing zone 15 and a second compressing zone 16 supplying an extension orifice. The mixing zone 15 may comprise one or more devices having blind channels in the periphery as shown, or discontinuous helical flights (see Fig. 3, not shown). The screw may be assembled from a plurality of separate elements; preferred lengths for each element or zone are given, and a double start screw is preferred in the decompression zone 12. The feeding of the roving into this zone, which has a small root diameter, prevents tangling.</p> |
