Ambient temp curable organic solvent free, can end sealant - comprising high mol wt SBR, small particle size filler, antioxidant, anionic surfactant, and polyacrylic acid salt

An ambient temp. settable aqa.-based, can-sealing compsn. consists of (in addition to the aqs. vehicle) 17.5-24.5 pbw styrene-butadiene rubber (20-30% styrene) of Mooney (ML) viscosity if 212 degrees F of 100-150; 35-55 pbw inert filler of particle size 2 mu chosen from CaCO3, TiO2 Al silicate, Mg silicate and/or lamp black; 0.1-2.0 pbw antioxidant chosen from butylated hydroxy anisole, styrenated butylated p-cresol and/or butylated hydroxy toluene; 0.9-1.5 pbw anionic wetting agent; and 0.08 - 0.4 pbw polyacrylic acid salt as thickening agent. The sealant compsn. is adjusted toa n overall pH of 8.0 - 10.0. Compsn. is used for sealing a can end to a can body of the type used for beverages, fruits, vegetables, aerosols, paints, etc. The compsn. is free from volatile organic solvents and is air-dryable.
