<p>1484219 Mechanism for locking nut on a threaded spindle HI-SHEAR CORP and G S WING 17 Nov 1975 [15 Nov 1974] 47337/75 Heading F2H A mechanism for locking a nut 90 on a threaded spindle 70 comprises a washer 75 keyed to the spindle and having a slotted peripheral portion 80, a lock ring 89 having lugs 87, which engage with the slots in the peripheral portion of the washer, and serrations 88, which engage with serrations 97 on the nut, and a resilient ring 100, the arrangement being such that when the lock ring is pushed forward to disengage its serrations from those on the nut, the resilient ring is contracted in diameter and when pressure on the lock ring is released, for instance, after tightening of the nut on the spindle, the expansion of the resilient ring back to its normal diameter forces the lock ring back into engagement with the nut. The ring may be in the form of an incomplete circle having ends which in the normal unstrained condition are spaced apart from each other (Fig. 6, not shown). The lock ring may be prevented from slipping off the nut by means of shoulder 93 and swaging 103. The lugs on the lock ring may be provided with tabs 104 which are bent over the washer. Markings may be provided on rear faces of the lock ring and nut to indicate the relative positions of their serrations, and thereby facilitate locking. A socket wrench 105 may be used for applying pressure to the lock ring and turning the nut.</p> |
