Cu is recovered from sulphide ore by mixing and firing the ore under vacuum in the absence of H2O, CO2 and O2 with at least a stoichiometric amount of a non-saturated sulphide of Na or K at 210-360 degrees C thereby forming a melt of Cu, Cu oxides and more saturated sulphides of Na or K and separating Cu from the melt. The ore, which may also contain sulphides of Ag, Pb, Mo, Sb and A, is first roasted at 300 degrees C to remove CO2 and H2O. The ore is then heated with the polysulphide, the melt is cooled and leached with water. The leach solution is separated and a metal above Mo in EMF series is added to precipitate Mo, As and Sb present and the filtrate is evaporated to recover sulphide and S. The sulphide may be thermally decomposed to a non saturated sulphide and recycled. The non-saturated sulphide may be generated in situ by mixing NaOH/KOH and S with the ore.
|
