A fluid diffusion cell for oxygenation or dialysis of blood comprises a selectively permeably membrane folded to form alternately positioned first and second pockets, the first pockets 24B, 24C, &c. and the second pockets 28A, 28B, &c. opening at opposite sides of the membrane and defining separate parallel flow paths along the membrane for the respective fluids, first fluid inlet means and outlet means 75 in communication with the mouths of the first pockets at positions spaced along the membrane, second fluid inlet means and outlet means 76 in similar communication with the mouths of the second pockets and a support member 36 or 38 in each pocket. The inlet means and outlet means for each fluid together with the means closing the mouths of the pockets may comprise for each set of pockets a manifold 75 or 76 sealed to the edge of the pleats of the membrane along its length and having wells (79), (80) (Figs. 8, 9 not shown), at its ends for communication with the open ends of the pockets. The support members 36 in the oxygen or dialyser fluid pockets are thinner at their ends 40 than in their middle portions and support members 38 for the blood pockets are of uniform thickness; channels 60 are then part of the blood flow path and canals 92 form entries into and exits from the oxygen or dialyser fluid pockets. The membrane may be a film of elastomer over a mesh of fibre glass or polytetrafluorethylene about 0.005" thick. Support membrane 36 may be vinyl-coated fibre glass, support membrane 38 polyethylene, and rigid endmembers 72, 74 (Fig. 4) fibre-glass reinforced phenolic plastics. |
