The rack and pinion monorail has a running rail (1) which is of essentially box-shaped cross-section and bears on the underside a toothed rack (2). The monorail has wheel sets with a toothed drive wheel (6) and bearing wheels (7) running on the upper side of the running rail. So that deposits, whether snow, ice or other soiling, cannot become fixed on the upper side of the running rail in a troublesome manner, the running rail (1) has a positively engaging running rail head (8) of convex cross-section. The bearing wheels (7) are matched to the running rail head. <IMAGE>
