The unit contains a roll of paper tape, held on two reels. The paper tape can be unwound in either direction at a fast speed, changing to a slow speed for reading information written on the tape. The unit is in a box fitted with a magnifier. One reel is at each end of the box with an electric motor between them. The motor shaft has a friction drive onto two rollers, mounted in a bracket. An arm forms a switch and selects between two upper and two lower contacts, depending on the speed and direction required, the rollers automatically driving the reels.
