1,197,148. Friction clutch. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 15 May, 1969 [14 June, 1968], No. 24815/69. Heading F2C. A coil-spring friction clutch comprises a spring 19 fast with a driven hub 15 and contracting on to a driving hub 13 on removing a fixed stop 41 from an abutment 43 on a sleeve 33 which receives the free end 31 of the spring 19, slipping of the spring on initial engagement with the hub 13 being reduced by a preloaded back-up spring 45 frictionally engaging the hub 13 and having an end 47 engaging the end 31 of spring 19 to wrap the spring 19 tighter on relative movement between the spring 19 and hub 13 due to such slip. Again, the back-up spring end 47 may engage in sleeve 33 and thus act indirectly on spring 19. The spring 47 may comprise a plurality of windings, and is selfcompensating for frictional wear. A pawl 51 co-operates with a cam 49 on hub 15 to prevent reverse rotation of driven shaft 17. |
