1305308 Nuclear fuel COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 1 May 1970 [2 May 1969] 21088/70 Heading G6C [Also in Division C1] Nuclear fuel elements comprise sintered compacts of simple or mixed actinide oxides prepared by outgassing the oxide powder in a partial vacuum by heating to a temp. below the sintering temperature (e.g. about 1200‹ C.), compressing the resultant oxide optionally with a binder to form a compact and then heating in an inert atmosphere at a temperature below the melting point of the oxide (e.g. 1650‹ C.) to sinter. Exemplified oxides are UO 2 and UO 2 / PuO 2 . Preferred compacts have density 95À5% of theoretical and diameter 57 mm.
