The grids are formed by perpendicular plates fitted together to form cells of square section. The plates have large hollowings sepd. by corrugated bands. The bands project into the cells and act as springs, holding rods of the combustible assembly against other such springs and against bosses in the flat parts of the sheets. Each rod is thus held in two different directions at four points regularly spaced around its periphery and at several points in its length. The cooling fluid circulates around the assembly through the openings, and the bands and bosses absorb vibrations. The invention improves the grid by increasing the flexibility of the springs so that they exert sufficient, but not too much, force in supporting the rods against the bosses and provide for variations in the dia. of the rods and the dimensions of the cells. This is achieved by creating a zone of reduced mechanical resistance in the plates, by making slots in the sheets where they join the bands, so that the plates can be distorted between the slots and the bands. This distortion is added to the bending of the bands. The curve of force exerted by the spring as a function of its bending is as flat as possible. Better equilibration of the support pressures, a greater range of operation, more uniform distribution of mass across the structure, less vibration and less wear of the rods are obtd.
|
