They may be prepared by acylating indane-1,3-dione or a sodium salt thereof with a compound of formula the reaction being carried out in an organic solvent when the sodium salt is used, or by condensing a compound of formula wherein X is halogen, with a compound of formula in an organic solvent. The compounds of the invention exhibit hypoprothrombinaemia-inducing activity and may be administered orally in admixture with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier or diluent.
