<p>1478054 Printing ink binders HOECHST AG 28 June 1974 [28 June 1973] 28864/74 Heading C3P Binders for non-aqueous printing inks comprising a modified hydrocarbon resin containing carboxylic acid units derived from a monoolefinically unsaturated mono- or dibasic carboxylic acid, the carboxylic groups of which are partially esterified with a polyhydric alcohol having up to 20 carbon atoms and wherein any aliphatic straight chain diol does not contribute more than 20% of the total number of alcoholic hydroxyl groups in such amount that the modified hydrocarbon resin contains 0À01 to 0À7 ester groups of the polyhydric alcohol per acid group originally present and the remaining carboxyl groups are in their free state, may be prepared by polymerizing a mixture of unsaturated hydrocarbons and subjecting the product to an addition reaction with (a) an olefinically unsaturated polycarboxylic acid followed by esterification with a polyhydric alcohol or (b) an olefinically unsaturated ester of a carboxylic acid and a polyhydric alcohol, so that in embodiment (a) a part of the polycarboxylic acid is copolymerized with monomers remaining in the hydrocarbon resin mixture and the products of this reaction are at least in part graftpolymerized on to the hydrocarbon resin. The modified resin may also contain ester groups of monohydric alcohols in amounts up to 50% of the ester groups present. Polymerization may be effected in the presence of a hydrocarbon chain-stopper, and the binders may contain addition resins mixed or reacted with the modified hydrocarbon resin.</p> |
