The device illuminates a fluidic crystal display (1) from behind and employs an optical fibre block (4), positioned between a light source (6) and the rear of the display (1). The surface (13) of the individual optical fibres facing the light source (6) is smaller than the surface (R) which faces towards the rear of the display. Pref. the light input surface of each of the fibres is at an angle of at least 90 degrees to the longitudinal axis (11) of the fibres. The light output surface is at an acute angle to this axis. A semi-reflecting mirror (2) may be positioned between the fibre block and the rear of the display. |
