1477300 Thermosetting resin compositions based on polybutadienes BRITISH INDUSTRIAL PLASTICS Ltd 30 May 1974 [5 June 1973] 26897/73 Heading C3P A synthetic thermosetting resin composition comprises either: (i) a thermosetting resin which is: (a) an amineformaldehyde resin, (b) a phenolic resin, (c) an unsaturated polyester having unsaturation along the backbone of the polymer, optionally (pre) modified with a cross-linkable 1,2-polybutadiene having a vinyl content of greater than 50% of the unsaturation thereof, (d) a hydroxy-, carboxyl-, mercapto-, or amino-terminated derivative of a cross linkable 1,2-polybutadiene having a vinyl content of greater than 50% of the unsaturation thereof, (e) a chain-extended derivative of (c) or (d), or (f) a co-extended derivative of (c) and (d); and (ii) not more than 50% by weight, based on the total weight of (i) and (ii), of a butadiene which is: (A) a polybutadiene having a vinyl content of not more than 50% of the unsaturation thereof, (B) a hydroxyl-, carboxyl, mercapto-, or amino-terminated derivative of (A), or (C) a chain-extended derivative of B, or comprises (iii) a co-extended derivative of (i)(c) and (ii)(B) containing not more than 50% by weight of (ii)(B). By "chain-extended derivative" is meant a derivative obtained by reacting the terminal groups in the polybutadiene with a co-reactive chain extending agent, e.g. a urethane or epoxy compound. By "co-extended derivatives" is meant a derivative obtained by reacting an unsaturated polyester and a "low-vinyl" polybutadiene (ii)(B) or a "high-vinyl" polybutadiene derivative (i)(d) simultaneously with a co-reactive chain-extending agent. The specific examples disclose compositions comprising styrenated polypropylene maleate phthalate, OH- terminated polybutadiene (20% vinyl) or said polybutadiene chain extended with methylene diphenyl diisocyanate, calcined clay and calcium carbonate (2, 3, 12); polypropylene maleate phthalate, OH-terminated polybutadiene (20% vinyl) or said polybutadiene chain extended with methylene diphenyl diisocyanate, calcined clay and calcium carbonate (5, 6, 11); styrenated polypropylene maleate phthalate, OH- terminated polybutadiene (20% vinyl) extended with methylene diphenyl diisocyanate and calcium carbonate (B). and OH-terminated polybutadiene (20% vinyl) co-extended with methylene diphenyl diisocyanate and OH- terminated high-vinyl polybutadiene extended with methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (10). Examples 13 and 15 describe a co-extended material formed from polypropylene maleate phthalate optionally styrenated (15) and OH- terminated polybutadiene (20% vinyl) reacted with methylene diphenyl diisocyanate.
