The wound dressing consists of an elastomeric layer to which is bonded a knit or a layer of flock fibres. The knit or the fibres is or are made of a tissue-compatible material which a) is essentially absorbed by the living tissue within 90 days, b) retains its integrity for at least 10 days, c) has a surface with interspaces into which the granulation tissue can grow, but can be easily removed from the wound without removing the granulation tissue bed, and d) is composed of a polymer comprising hydrolytically degradable polyglycolic ester. The wound dressing is suitable for humans or mammalian animals with partially destroyed skin for preventing moisture losses and bacterial contamination. It adapts to the tissue surface with minimal formation of fluid or air accumulations that cause infection problems. Its water vapour permeability is comparable to that of the intact human skin. |
