Hinged headrest on car safety seat - has pneumatic absorbers between separate segments to eliminate whiplash action

The car safety seat has a headrest which consists of two individual cushions (17, 23). They are linked by hinge plates (24) and a pneumatic damping cylinder (20). A similar connection is provided between the lower headrest cushion (23) and the top of the back rest (15). To prevent injury to head and neck during a collision, due to the whiplash action of the head, the shock absorbers in the headrest slowly absorb the energy which causes the whiplash motion. Thus the head is eased backwards at a controlled rate, and to an extent which does not damage the spine.
