The end of the extension may be rounded as shown and the gas inlet pipe divided in to sections, each having its own gas supply by axial partitions. The gas inlet pipe or the lower portion thereof may be fluted, and may be axially adjustable to vary the gap 6 see Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown); its lower end may be belled or have a portion of larger diameter; there may be hollow flow disturbing baffles (8) in the gap 6 attached to the outside of the pipe 5 or the inside of the pipe 3, 4.
