A dowel which can be used, in particular, in end-grained wood comprises a sleeve (1) with an expansion screw (8) arranged rotatably therein. The front end of the expansion screw-bolt has two conically tapering parts (9, 10) and, therebetween, an intermediate region (11) which is in the form of a cylinder or an oppositely directed cone. In the front region of the dowel sleeve (1) there are formed tongues (4) which run towards one another in a hook-like manner and away from one another again and have front edges designed as cutting edges (5). Given a dowel sleeve (1) inserted into a bore in end-grained wood and the insertion of the expansion screw (8) into the sleeve (1), the foremost cone (9) first of all expands the tongues (4) slightly for the first cut of the cutting edges (5) into the surrounding end-grained wood. Thereafter, the external thread of the expansion screw (8) is brought into engagement with the internal thread (34) of the sleeve (1) and torque can be applied in order that, via the actual expansion cone (10), full penetration of the cutting edges (5), by expanding the tongues (4) to their full extent, can be carried out. <IMAGE>
