Leather dyeing and treatment to improve handle - with condensates of unsatd fatty acids or esters with beta-hydroxyethyl-ethylene diamine

In a leather dyeing process, the leather is treated before, during but pref. after dyeing, esp. in an exhaust bath with condensates (A) of 0.8-2.5 (0.9-2) moles 12-22C unsatd. fatty acids or their alkyl esters with 1 mole beta-hydroxyethyl-ethylene diamine (I), in an aq. bath at pH 3-4.5. Colour depth, gloss and handle of leather are improved. (A) may be used in combination with adducts (B) of 4-20 moles CH2CH2O with 12-20C fatty amines and/or paraffin oil, a prefd. compsn. having a high softening effect. contg. by wt. 50-70% (A), 7-15% (B) and 10-25% paraffin oil having 4-6 degrees Engler viscosity at 20 degrees C.
