<p>The coupling jaw (4) of the articulated coupling has a pivot point (6) set a min. distance from the end of the coupling slot (3), and in the centre line of the vehicle. The catch is activated by a cam lever (12) which is pushed by the trailer kingpin (1), and which is hinged on a short arm extension (8) of the jaw. The jaw is closed against spring pressure (10) and is secured by a safety catch (17). The short, in line mounting of the jaw ensures that the force on the coupling pivot (6) is never more than the trailer load, and is not larger torque about the kingpin, as in off-centre pivots. The safety lever is released by a hand control (18) when the trailer is dropped.</p> |
