1472846 Sulphonated polymers EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 28 Feb 1975 8481/75 Heading C3P Sulphonated polymers, especially butyl rubber or EPDM, are prepared by (a) polymerizing the monomers in solution in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts or Ziegler-type catalyst to produce a reactor effluent containing polymer, unreacted light monomer, active catalyst and solvent, (b) treating the effluent to remove therefrom substantially all unreacted light monomer, (c) simultaneously sulphonating the polymer and quenching the catalyst by adding thereto either (i) a sulphur trioxide donor in combination with a Lewis base containing O, N or P, or (ii) an acyl sulphate optionally in admixture with a carboxylic acid, and (d) neutralizing the sulphonated polymer. Long lists of appropriate materials for use in this process are given. In the example, ethylene, propylene and ethylidene norbornene are copolymerized in hexane in the presence of VOCl 3 , Ti(O-Bu) 4 and EtAlCl 2 , the unreacted monomer stripped at 62‹ C. under a nitrogen purge, the combined sulphonation/ quench step effected with the reaction product of acetic anhydride and concentrated H 2 SO 4 , and the product neutralized with ethylamine.
