The bed or couch (1) has two horizontal members supported by two vertical legs (5) with inclined bracing members (4). The adjustable head (2) is hinged to the frame (1) with two bolts (3). The underside of the head (2) is formed from two inclined members (6, 7). The lower hed member (7) rests on a roller (16) which runs on the main frame member (4). The position of the roller (16) is controlled by the screwed rod (12) which passes through a nut (13) rotated by the electric motor (14) through a reduction gear. The angle of inclination of the head (2) can thus be adjusted by running the motor (14) in the appropriate direction.
